Children’s Dentistry

Per the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, your child should visit the dentist within six months after the presence of the first tooth or by his or her first birthday. Early oral examination aids in the detection of the early stages of tooth decay. Early detection is also essential to maintain good oral health.

Children’s Dentistry

A lifetime of healthy teeth begins with good dental habits. Give your child a strong foundation by bringing them for an exam and cleaning twice each year. Encourage your child to listen to the dental team during their visit. Work with your child at home to improve their dental hygiene routine.

During each visit, we will gently clean your child’s teeth and remove any plaque or tartar. We will carefully examine their mouth and teeth for any potential issues. Regular cleanings and exams can help prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health issues.

Tooth decay has become the most common chronic childhood illness in the U.S. We will teach you and your child how to properly brush and floss their teeth as they grow. We will discuss dental hygiene habits and healthy food choices. We will teach your child to be our partner in keeping their mouth and teeth healthy.

We may recommend treating your child’s teeth with fluoride. This mineral can strengthen tooth enamel, making teeth more resistant to decay. Fluoride may be applied in office or used in certain toothpastes and mouth rinses.

In some cases, we may recommend the use of dental sealants. Sealants are a protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of molars. Recent studies have found that sealants can be highly effective in preventing tooth decay.

Dental Hygiene Education

Professional dental cleanings are important for maintaining great oral health. However, it is vital that your child continues good dental hygiene at home as well.

Dr. Lindsey and Dr. Matt recommend brushing at least twice per day and flossing daily. You should brush and floss your child’s teeth until they are old enough to do this unassisted. This helps prevent tooth decay, periodontal disease, and other oral health issues.

There are additional ways to help keep teeth strong and healthy. Toothpastes and mouth rinses with fluoride are available over-the-counter. Eating a balanced diet and limiting sugary snacks can also contribute to good oral health.

When you can, have your child drink a glass of water after meals. This can help wash away sugars from foods and drinks. If something your child eats or drinks contains acids, such as sodas or candies, have them wait 30 minutes before brushing. This will allow their saliva time to neutralize the acids and protect their teeth.

Healthy dental hygiene habits can help keep your child’s teeth strong and beautiful. If you have any questions about your child’s current dental hygiene routine, please contact us.

Special Needs Patient Care

Dr. Lindsey has found that many children with special needs have unique dental care needs that require a flexible approach. Certain patients might have medication or dietary needs that can compromise their dental health. Other patients have difficulty maintaining good oral hygiene habits. We understand that some children might find it difficult to sit still for a dental examination.

In some cases, special needs children have a higher risk of developing tooth decay, gum disease, tartar buildup, and oral trauma.

Our team is here for you and your child. With years of experience, we will personalize your child’s care and treatment to meet their needs. Our gentle, compassionate manner of care will ensure your child’s dental health is in good hands with our team.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous Oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is a mild dental sedation medication. Once inhaled, it induces a state of mild relaxation. It also reduces sensitivity to pain. Nitrous Oxide is safe for virtually every patient, regardless of age. Following treatment, oxygen is used to neutralize the effects of the nitrous oxide. Once this is complete, you will be fully alert and able to drive yourself home.
